Expert settlement agreement advice

Whether you’ve been selected for redundancy, are facing disciplinary issues, or simply want to ensure the offer on the table is fair, I’ll make sure you fully understand your rights and options.

If you’re ready to accept the deal, I will guide you through the terms and effect quickly and clearly. If something doesn’t look right, or if I notice any traps or loopholes, I’ll raise and resolve those issues on your behalf.

My experience in advising upon and negotiating Settlement Agreements can help you achieve a fair and reasonable outcome in good time.

What is a settlement agreement?

A Settlement Agreement (formerly known as a Compromise Agreement) is a legally binding contract between an employer and employee aimed at bringing about a clean break to the employment relationship. It allows both sides to agree on the terms for ending employment — usually involving a compensation payment — in exchange for the employee waiving the right to bring future claims to an employment tribunal.

What’s in it for you?

Settlement Agreements typically include a severance payment or other benefits that make leaving your employment on agreed terms worthwhile. My job is to ensure you’re fully aware of what’s included — and that you’re not missing out on what you may be entitled to receive.

What should you watch out for?

Restrictive or “gagging” clauses
Post-termination restraints
Bonus or commission clawbacks
Unclear references to redundancy payments or holiday pay
If there’s something unfair or unreasonable, I’ll make sure it’s addressed before you sign.

How much will it cost me?

In most cases, you won’t pay anything.

Your employer usually contributes towards your legal fees for independent advice — and this very often covers all costs. In more complex cases, I’ll always seek to negotiate a higher contribution so you’re not out of pocket.

I also act for employers

At Wolverhampton Employment Law, I regularly assist employers in drafting, reviewing, and implementing Settlement Agreements. Whether you need:
A draft agreement to formalise a negotiated exit
Guidance on using a “protected conversation”
Support in managing staff exits or redundancy situations
…I can provide clear, efficient legal support that minimises risk and protects your business.

Handling multiple settlement agreements

I also have extensive experience managing bulk settlement agreements, for example during:
Large-scale redundancies
TUPE transfers
Internal restructuring exercises
I can act as a single independent legal point of contact, liaising directly with HR teams to save time and reduce costs. I can manage group consultations via site visits, video calls, or secure digital communication to ensure a smooth and compliant process for all parties.
